Polyanionic Cellulose Low Viscosity (PAC LV) is a water-soluble polymer made by carboxymethylation of natural cellulose and is widely used in the oil field. Low-viscosity PAC (PAC-LV) has become a key additive in high-permeability reservoirs, shallow oil fields and complex drilling fluid systems due to PAC LV's rapid dissolution, low thickening effect and excellent fluid loss reduction performance.
Main Application for PAC LV in Oil Drilling
-
1. PAC LV used in drilling fluid system
- PAC LV used as fluid loss reducer: The Low viscosity polyanionic cellulose could reduce the loss of drilling fluid to the formation and protect the permeability of the reservoir, especially suitable for high permeability sandstone formations. With such kind of function, the PAC LV could prevent water seepage or collapse of well wall rock during the drilling process.
- PAC LV used as flow pattern adjustment additive: The low viscosity polyanionic cellulose could improve the rheology of drilling fluid and reduce the plastic viscosity. Meantime, with the low viscosity of the PAC LV, it can avoid increased pumping resistance during the oil well working procedure.
-
2. PAC LV used as auxiliary additives in fracturing fluid
- PAC LV used as proppant dispersion: The low viscosity polyanionic cellulose could work synergistically with the main thickener (such as guar gum), then disperse the proppant (such as quartz sand) evenly and efficiently reduce the friction resistance of the fracturing fluid.
-
3. PAC LV used in water injection and oil displacement system
- PAC LV's flow control ability: The low viscosity polyanionic cellulose could adjust the viscosity of the injected water, the high gelling performance could improve the oil-water flow ratio, inhibit the "fingering" phenomenon, and expand the swept volume. Under this ability, the oil could be well replaced during the compelling process.
-
4. PAC LV used as cementing slurry regulator
With PAC LV's sedimentation stability, the cementing fluids could prevent the solid phase of the cement slurry from stratifying, and adjust the pumping performance to ensure smooth construction.
APPLICATION SOLUTIONS & INDUSTRY CASES

High-Permeability Reservoir Solutions
PAC-LV helps operators reduce API fluid loss by 40–65% in sandstone formations, significantly improving borehole stability in high-permeability zones.
Shallow & Offshore Drilling Solutions
Its fast hydration and low viscosity reduce pump pressure and avoid excessive thickening in offshore deep-water drilling systems, improving operational efficiency.
Fracturing Fluid Optimization
PAC-LV enhances proppant suspension and reduces friction when used together with guar gum, lowering chemical consumption and improving proppant placement.
Water Injection/Oil Displacement
Field cases show PAC-LV effectively reduces channeling, stabilizes the injection profile, and increases oil recovery factor by 3–8% in water flood fields.

Advantage

1. Environmental protection
The low viscosity polyanionic cellulose's raw material is natural refine cotton or wooden pulp cellulose, which is non-toxic and biodegradable. The drilling fluids use PAC LV is in line with the trend of green oilfield development and could reduce the pollution to soil and water sources.
2. Economical
The dosage is only 30%-60% of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), so with PAC LV, the drilling system could under working with lower cost and suitable for low-cost and efficient treatment of complex well sections.
3. Compatibility
PAC LV has strong compatibility with oilfield chemicals such as lignin sulfonate and polyacrylamide (HPAM), which can synergistically improve system performance. It can improve the temperature tolerance and resistance on the salt water.
4. Shear resistance
The PAC LV's low viscosity property makes its viscosity recovery ability better than high-viscosity products in high-speed pumping or stirring, and is suitable for dynamic working environments. So, PAC LV is most favorable for the deep sea water oil drilling.

QUALITY CONTROL SYSTEM (QC SYSTEM)
All PAC-LV is produced from strictly-selected refined cotton or wood-pulp cellulose sourced from certified suppliers. Each batch undergoes purity verification, moisture check and DP (degree of polymerization) inspection before entering production, ensuring stable substitution levels and filtration performance.
The entire carboxymethylation and purification process is monitored through on-line viscosity tracking, etherification degree control and reaction temperature curve monitoring, ensuring consistency between different production lots.
We test filtration loss (API), DS, viscosity reading at 600 rpm, pH and moisture according to international oilfield chemical standards to guarantee performance stability in drilling fluids.
Before delivery, each batch is re-tested with a random sampling rate of AQL 0.65, including repeat fluid-loss measurement to ensure the product maintains performance after packaging.
COA, MSDS, TDS, and batch traceability reports are available for all global shipments. Each batch can be traced back to raw materials and reaction parameters.
